About Us

About the Campaign

Health is Primary is a communications campaign to advocate for the values of family medicine, demonstrate the benefits of primary care, and engage patients in our health care system. Our aim is to build a primary care system that reflects the values of family medicine, puts patients at the center of care, and improves the health of all Americans.

The campaign is showcasing the individuals, organizations, and communities that are making health primary so we can build on their success to ensure that everyone has access to the benefits of primary care.

Family Physicians

Family physicians are personal doctors for people of all ages and health conditions. They are a reliable first contact for health concerns and directly address most health care needs. Through enduring partnerships, family physicians help patients prevent, understand, and manage illness, navigate the health system and set health goals. Family physicians and their teams adapt their care to the unique needs of their patients and communities. They use data to monitor and manage their patient population, and use the best science available to prioritize services most likely to benefit health. They are ideal leaders of health care systems and partners for public health.

Future of Family Medicine

We want to transform the family medicine specialty to ensure that we can meet the nation's health care needs and, ultimately, improve the health of every American. This means: Furthering the evolution of the patient-centered medical home; Advancing the use of technology; Ensuring a strong primary care workforce; and, Shifting the payment system to improve the quality of care and the health of patients. In 2015 the campaign collected stories and held events in Seattle, Raleigh, Chicago, Denver and Detroit.

In 2016 and 2017, Health is Primary will continue to collect local stories of innovation and transformation, with a focus on the following markets: California, Georgia, Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, New Jersey, Arizona, Minnesota, Mississippi and Rhode Island.
